CubeSat Reference Model Development and Distribution
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a key methodology for advancing the systems engineering discipline. The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) established the MBSE Initiative to promote, advance, and institutionalize the practice of MBSE.
The INCOSE Space Systems Working Group (SSWG) has been investigating the applicability of MBSE for designing CubeSats since 2011. The SSWG is currently developing a CubeSat Reference Model (CRM).
The CubeSat form-factor was established in 1999 by California Polytechnic State University and Stanford University. A CubeSat unit is 10x10x10 centimeters with a mass of about 1.3 kilograms. Units can be joined to form a larger satellite and are typically launched as secondary payloads or deployed from the International Space Station.
The CRM will be an Object Management Group (OMG) specification and will be made available to universities for classroom and laboratory instruction. It will contain engineering methodology, model elements, and regulations needed to model, develop, launch, deploy, and operate a mission-specific CubeSat.
